Skatepark is a purpose-built recreational environment for the practice of Skate. May contain half-pipes, rails, boxes, vert ramps, pyramids, swimming pools, as well as several other types of obstacles. The Skateparks were created exclusively for the practice of Skate , but with time, athletes from other sports as BMX and skaters began to use this space for your sports activities. The practice of Skate and BMX in the same skatepark was banned in some places, causing problems for the safety of the athletes. The first skatepark in the world was built in Carlsbad, California . The Carlsbad Skatepark was designed and built by inventors Jack Graham and John O'Malley. Due to the extreme climate of the city, was built inside the pavilion. A few of the private parks of the 1970s remain, with the notable exception of Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida , United States . But many public parks of that era can still be found throughout Western Europe , Australia and New Zealand . The downturn in the general skateboard market in the 1980s and liability insurance premiums contributed to the high disappearance of the first skateparks.

Public skateparks have had a resurgence in the U.S., made possible by legislation such as California's 1998 law stating that skateboarding is an inherently "a Hazardous Recreational Activity" (HRA), and therefore municipalities and their employees may not be held liable for claims of negligence resulting in injuries to skateboarders.
